Crash Statistics
In the last three years there were 15,753 crashes on the county's roads, with 1 in 4 involving a business driver.
Work related driving
About one quarter of all vehicle miles travelled annually on Britain's roads are for work purposes (excluding commuting). 1
- Of the three million company cars on Britain's roads, roughly one third will be involved in a crash annually. 2
- Company drivers who drive more than 80% of their annual mileage on work related journeys have more than 50% more injury accidents than similar drivers who do no work related mileage. 2
- Work related road crashes are the biggest cause of work related accidental death. 3
- Between 800 and 1000 people are killed annually in work related road traffic crashes. 3
- Business drivers have collision rates that are 30-40% higher than those of private drivers. 3

Fatigue
- Roughly 300 people are killed each year as a result of drivers falling asleep at the wheel. 2
- About four in ten tiredness-related crashes involve someone driving a commercial vehicle. 2
Mobile phones
- Reaction times for drivers using a handheld phone are 30% worse than when driving under the influence of alcohol at the legal limit. 3
- If you use a mobile phone while driving you are four times more likely to crash. 3
Seat belts
- You are twice as likely to die in a crash if you fail to wear a seat belt. 3
- Nearly 300 lives could have been saved in 2007 had all car occupants been wearing a seat belt. 3
Speed
- If a pedestrian is hit at:
- 30mph, there is an 80% chance of survival
- 35mph, there is a 50/50 chance of survival
- 40mph, there is a 10% chance of survival
- For each 1mph reduction in average speed, accident frequency is reduced by 5%. 3
